Go back to Spain Self Catering Holidays on the Balearic Islands

Balearic Islands Villas & Apartments

Since the heady hippy days of the 60’s the Balearic Islands have long been popular for self catering holidays. Apart from the obvious sun, seas and sand, the Balearics appeal is that the islands are multifaceted offering different things to different people. There are Ibiza apartments for young clubbers, Menorca villas for pure relaxation, Formentera holiday rentals for unabashed beach-bums and Majorca villas and apartments to suit all tastes. Add a blessed climate, stunning scenery and a rich history it’s pretty clear why the Balearic Islands are so popular.

Ibiza town, or Vila d'Eivissa in Spanish, is on the south of the island and its historic old quarter of quaint cobbled alleyways winding their way up to the fortified upper town of Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its ancient battlements, castle and cathedral, is in stark contrast to the brash vibrant holiday resort of San Antonio Abad in the northwest. Equally, the sandy beaches hidden in tranquil rocky coves around Santa Eulària, Portinatx or Es Canar are juxtaposed with Ibiza’s notorious live music and summer clubbing scene. Luckily, Ibiza holiday rentals cater across the spectrum from family villas in Ibiza town to bachelor apartments in San Antonio. Nearest airport: Ibiza

Self catering villas and apartments for rent in Formentera, Spain (Photo: Wikipedia: Vriullop)Formentera Formentera is about 6 km (4 mi) south of Ibiza and can only be reached by ferry, either from Ibiza town or Denia on the Spanish mainland. Due to its remote location, Formentera is perhaps the most unspoilt of all the Balearic Islands. However, the downside is that self catering holidays on Formentera are hard to find, although there are several hotels and guest houses. The ferry from Ibiza only takes around 30 minutes and for beach lovers the island is worth visiting, even if it’s just a day trip. Formentera is renowned for its pristine white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters and it’s the perfect place for relaxing on the beach, some of which have nudist areas, or enjoying the host of water sports on offer from scuba diving to windsurfing. Self catering villas and apartments for rent in Mallorca (Majorca), Spain (Photo: Wikipedia: Darkone)Majorca The largest of the Balearics, Majorca receives about 10 million holidaymakers a year, so it’s just as well. Like Ibiza, Majorca has a split personality. The dramatic mountainous northwest coast is a World Heritage Site offering breathtaking landscapes, lunar like rock formations, and cliffs that plunge vertically into the sea below. Here, holiday rentals in Port de Sóller are popular. However, it’s in resorts like Port de Pollença, Alcúdia Bay and Porto Cristo around the beautiful sandy beaches of Majorca’s north and east coast were most of the self catering holidays are found. In the south there are Palma de Mallorca villas for the more refined and apartments for rent in Magaluf, Palma Nova and Arenal for the fun loving. Nearest airport: Majorca

Self catering villas and apartments for rent in Menorca (Minorca), Spain (Photo: Wikipedia: Montan Nito)Menorca After Formentera, the most peaceful of the Balearic Islands is Menorca. Its natural beauty has been recognised by UNESCO for its biodiversity and fascinating landscapes of caves and wetlands of the Albufera des Grau nature reserve at Cap de Favaritx. Southern Menorca is flat and home to some lovely sandy beaches and the capital Maó (Mahón). Northern Menorca has rolling hills and a rugged coastline punctuated with secluded coves surrounded by pine groves. Self catering holidays in Menorca have long been popular and there’s a good selection of apartments and villas for rent across the island from Ciudadella de Menorca to Mahón. Popular resorts include Cala Blanca, Cala Galdana and Son Parc. Nearest airport: Menorca
