Brussels is an enclave within the Flemish Region, and with an excellent selection of self catering cottages and bungalows for rent in Flanders, it’s the perfect base for day trips to the capital. Of course, Flanders has plenty of attractions of its own. The great medieval cities of Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are eternally popular with their romantic canals, impressive architecture, magnificent castles and quaint market squares. Although highly emotive, also popular are the WWI Flanders battlefield tours around Ypres. The war graves, cemeteries and memorials commemorate the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War. Nearest airport: Brussels

Whilst charming, there’s a limited selection of apartments for rent in Brussels, with most holiday accommodation taking the form of hotels and aparthotels. However, there’s plenty to do and see in the Capital Region and many self catering holidaymakers rent holiday homes in surrounding Flanders and Wallonia, making day trips to Brussels to explore all this vibrant city has to offer. Brussels has evolved from its roots as a 10th century fortress town into a thriving, cosmopolitan city, with an eclectic mix of cultures, architecture and cuisine. There are 85 museums, trendy street-side bars and cafés, great gastronomy, impressive palaces and a host of exhibitions and festivals to enjoy. Perhaps a surprise to some, but Brussels really is an impressive city. Nearest airport: Brussels

In contrast to flat Flanders, Wallonia gives way to rolling forested hills, lush valleys and even mountains in the Ardennes region of southeast Belgium. There’s a huge choice of self catering farmhouses, cottages and bungalows for rent in Wallonia from cosy gîtes in the heart of the Ardennes to comfortable chalets and bungalows on holiday parks. Sightseeing in Wallonia includes picturesque towns like Bouillon, Dinant, Durbuy, Namur and Tournai; there’s Spa, that gave its name to spa towns around the world; La Roche, a popular holiday resort in the Ardennes; and the battlefields at Bastogne (WWII’s Battle of the Bulge) and Waterloo (Napoleon's last stand in 1815). Wallonia also has a host of castles and palaces to explore, with more per square mile than the rest of the world, fascinating museums and exquisite botanical gardens and parks.
