There’s Mount Ararat of biblical fame and the highest peak in Turkey at 5,137 metres and Lake Van, Turkey’s largest lake. The region is also the geographical and cultural heartland of Turkey, littered with the remnants of past civilisations that fought over these arid steppes and rugged mountains. Cities like Gaziantep (Antep) and Şanlıurfa (Urfa), where the Prophet Abraham was allegedly born, are worth visiting, as well as the Nemrut Daği National Park, with 2,150m high Mount Nemrut, home to the iconic statues at the tomb of King Antiochus.
